Le Tribunal Des âmes (Suspense Crime) (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

I read "The Whisperer" by Donato Carrisi and loved the book. It is a unique read with the types of crimes committed and even more so with the ending of how those crimes came to be committed. In "The Lost Girls of Rome", the reading experience is different. This book features excellent writing and a unique reveal at the end that I don't believe many will guess at - same as the previous novel - but the crime scenerios are presented differently from the previous novel. This book looks more at the lines of good and evil, and the grey area that exists in between the two. It's not a fast read and at the beginning, the stories taking place seem to be far apart from each other but come together quite uniquely in the end. I started out a bit slow with this (partially I think because it reads strangely, maybe translation issues . . .) but I ended up really intrigued by it. The story itself is unpredictable. Marcus, an amnesic priest is trying to find a disappeared young woman, Sandra is trying to figure out how her husband David died, an Interpol inspector is also on the track of David's death and meanwhile evil people are being killed wherever they go. The story brings this seemingly disparate threads together methodically (and at times disjointedly or forced but not to get in the way of the story). Underlying the story the author raises the issue of good in evil in a rather unique way. Throughout the novel, Marcus repeats one of the things he remembers, "There is a place where the world of light meets the world of darkness. It is there that everything happens in the land of shadows. . . we are the guards appointed to defend that border. But every now and again something manages to get through . . . My task is to chase it back into the darkness". But the problem of the book is deciphering just which things need to be chased back into the darkness and who is supposed to be doing the chasing.
