Leonora (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

Squarely ensconced in the pantheon of Latin America letters for her earlier work, Poniatowska presents another masterpiece. Two decades after the publication of the acclaimed Tinísima (1991), the subject of this fictionalized biography is writer and surrealist painter Leonora Carrington. Born in Britain in 1917, her privileged class facilitated her connections with the aesthetic elites of Europe, but it was her artistic ability, free spirit, extraordinary imagination, and physical beauty that endeared her to them. Max Ernst, twenty six years her senior, was her Pygmalion; their tempestuous affair was shattered by the Second World War. Carrington spent the next period of her life in Mexico, free of the suffocatingly close-knit circle of the European surrealists (and their patrons). Far more grounded, she painted and wrote prolifically, pursued her interest in esoterica, and found unexpected fulfillment in motherhood. While Carrington's intimates were the twentieth century's great iconoclasts and cultural creators: Breton, Duchamp, Man Ray, and Buñuel, among others, Poniatowska's gripping and well-researched account of the exceptional life of this indomitable, talented woman is the reason to read this book. A requisite purchase for academic and public libraries and bookstores.
