Nora Roberts is by far one of my favorite Authors. This was the second and certainly not the last time I will read this book. The story centers around a seemingly normal shopkeeper, whose past comes back to haunt her, via a cheap ceramic pooch. She later falls in love with the man who was hired to investigate her, and together they work to make things right. If you are a fan of romance/suspense, this book will not disappoint you! This is my first Nora Roberts book. Maybe not my last, but I’m not going out of my way soon for more. There are too many other author and books I’m interested in pursuing. I really was surprised to find myself liking the book as I started reading it. I wish I could describe how it seemed to me, but I don’t think I can. The writing just seemed to flow. The lead character is a complex woman, which intrigued me as well. While she has built a respectable life for herself, her early upbringing was anything but respectable. Her father is an incorrigible, life-long con-man. She worshipped him as a child, even though he was unreliable and the family has suddenly move, often. Finally, her mother has enough and leaves Laine’s father to try to build a normal life for her father.But Laine, as a young child, thought what her father did was game and gladly helped him with his schemes. As a grown woman, now, she does reject her father’s actions, but not him; she still loves him and can’t, at times, give up the tricks he taught her and the ability to deceive and scam, when she thinks it’s needed. This set up the tension in the book. Her father has scored the greatest theft of his life, but he involved with a totally ruthless man, who only used her father to achieve his goal – her father, and now Laine, are just obstacles in his path, which he will take pleasure in destroying and removing. Too compound matters, Laine is attracted to and falls in love with the insurance investigator who is trying to track and retrieve the goods stolen by her father the amoral mastermind.I was fine with all this, until the two love bird, Laine and Max, can’t stop talking about how wonderful each other is and how much they love each other. It just got to be a bit much for me. Not really distracting, but a bit unbelievable for two people who just met each other – already their planning the rest of their lives together. Just a bit too fairy tale for me; but I did enjoy the book.
