Meh. The second Katie Fforde I brought on my trip & likely the last I will read. I have a hard time with her heroines. They're kind of wishy-washy sad sacks, allowing themselves to be pushed around too much. The heroes are OK, but pretty self-indulgent. When they come through, it's a little baffling. I feel like these "romances" are the type that give romances the fluffy bad name they have. There's nothing particularly nice about the writing, the plots plod along, there's nothing particularly endearing about the characters, and then when a relationship turns up, it's kind of a shock. Next time, I'll put a little research into my vacation reading choices. After been immersed in N.Mandela's almost 800page autobiography for about a whole month, I wanted to find something light, enjoyable & easy to read, & this fit book fit the bill splendidly. I found it at our local library, the cover looked fresh & airy, & after reading the bookcover & establishing the setting would take place in the English countryside (which I really go for in books)I went ahead & borrowed it. I couldn't put it down, the first two-thirds of the book was read in one day, I loved the main character Laura Horsley, her infatuation with the great Irish writer Dermot Flynn, & then all that followed. I will say again that I especially loved the setting of the book, the English & Irish countryside. If I had to find some tiny bit that I didn't like, it would have to be the cliche of the happy ever after ending, & the way she avoided Dermot Flynn & wouldn't talk to him. Most definitely in the chick lit genre, I would be glad to read more books by Katie Fforde, if I feel like reading something light and enjoyable..
What do You think about Liefdesbrieven (2010)?
I really enjoyed this book, I love how the romance is weaved into the story of the book festival.
