Lord Of The White Hell Book Two (2011) - Plot & Excerpts
A really nice duology with an interesting fantasy setting (loved the world building .. only wished there was a map included), a thrilling storyline, lots of diverse characters and a lovely romance (somewhere on the edge between YA and adult) plus ... steampunk!!! (and horses, but I don't really care all that much about them). So, what's not to like (apart from the fact that it really should have just been one book and the division felt completely random)? Kiram is the first full blood Haldiim studying at the Academy Sagrada and his parents couldn’t be prouder. Among the Cadeleonians, Javier is feared and respected, he is believed to bear the white hell. There’s not much action in the first book and it became a little annoying when I realised, the romance became the entire story in itself and it had practically no fantasy or magic.The second book though, was more fun. I liked to meet Kiram’s family, and even though there was something missing, I certainly enjoyed the ride. There were some important issues raised in the book as xenophobia and racism; cultural clash and prejudice; and homophobia. Something else I found immensely interesting, was the matriarchy versus patriarchy realities. While Cadeleonians are a representation of western societies through century XV and XVI, Anacleto is a speculation of a matriarchy society, and I have to say politically and sociologically interesting. I was expecting Javier to freak out a little more than he did when he realised he’d might be sexually attracted to Kiram. Although, he was reluctant and ashamed of being a “bender”, he managed to override his fears and social background relatively quickly. I also enjoyed the secondary characters very much and became strangely protective of Fedeles, and proud of Nestor.

A worthy sequel to the first book. Well executed with defined and realistic characters.
