I couldn't really rate this book any higher because while I was interested, this book was really too short to judge. It felt like the first few chapters of a book rather than a standalone, which was disappointing. I'll have to read the other books to see how I feel about the rest. edit: I guess I didn't realize this was a serial kind of thing where each book is an installment. I'm still not changing my original rating because even while it was interesting, it wasn't gripping. Instead of, "I HAVE TO KEEP READING," it was more of, "Okay, I guess I will read the next one." This is a reread for me, and that makes it even more difficult to review. How can I pass judgement on The Shattered Gates (TSG), when it is but one small piece of a bigger puzzle?I will just say this: TSG contains a lot of information that foreshadows what is to come. It sets the mood for a very dark and dangerous world that is parallel, yet different from our own. A lot will happen: good things and bad things. Yet despite whatever may happen, there is much to appreciate in the complexity of such a vivid world. My advice: pay attention to details throughout the series, and pay special attention to what Kyle says/thinks in TSG. There is a lot of foreshadowing that occurs, or details that makes more sense later in the series.I think I will keep this review short. I get emotional with this series - I remember my first time through, I had continuous heart palpitations! But this series is one I do highly recommend, but not to the weak hearted!
What do You think about The Shattered Gates (2011)?
I have been holding off on this series for at least a year, guess everything else is on hold now

Got about 100 pages in and put it down. Didn't care enough to go on.
