Loud In The House Of Myself: Memoir Of A Strange Girl (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

A brutally honest memoir about what it's like to grow up and deal with mental illness both as a young person and an adult. Too rough for me at times- the author really takes you inside of her pain, and I didn't expect it to be as raw as it was. I totally respect the author for sharing what she did, and her willingness to not cut out the hard stuff, but this was really too much for me. Would highly recommend it to anyone who is dealing or has dealt with anorexia, bulimia, bipolar disorder or borderline personality disorder. As I don't fit into any of these groups, I didn't relate to a lot of it. But I did like the end message that although life with mental illness is a huge struggle, it is possible to heal and live a pretty good life in the end. I bought this book at an Active Minds conference last year. I loved reading it because I identified with so much of this book. Having grown up with depression. Pershall's beautiful prose is so endearing and poignant. I found myself laughing and gasping at the moments of her life. She is a fantastic writer and I'm glad that a book like this is out on the market because there are a lot of "strange girls" out there. Wonderfully honest book.

What do You think about Loud In The House Of Myself: Memoir Of A Strange Girl (2011)?

I struggled with this book simply because the author's self-hatred is so heart-breaking.

The book began well, but towards the end I slowly lost interest.
