This is the best marriage book I have yet read. For once it is a book that sacrifices neither practicality nor spiritual truth as it speaks to marriage - more often than not I have found that marriage books lean one way or the other but hardly ever combine the two effectively. This book did. And I love how seriously the Eldredges take marriage as both a spiritual battle and a personal battle. They don't think it's easy or that there are simple fixes. But they also paint a picture of a truly wonderful, truly possible marriage of beauty and joy. This book is full of hope and understanding and opens your eyes to what's really going on on the deeper levels of your marriage. Then it shows you how to bring God there. Simply wonderful. I would recommend this to every couple! There is some honest and powerful stuff in this book. Page 156 has my favorite piece. "God gave you your spouse to help smooth your rough edges. ...we must simply choose to let the other person's irritating nuances or thoughtless actions go. Rise above it, forgive, keep no record of wrongs. Wipe the slate clean everyday. Love and war. You are not playing house. Generosity of spirit will help you both so much. When there are bigger battles to face, you will not have worn thin your love for one another. " It is not easy to be married for 25 years. Nor is it common any more. I recommend this to anyone struggling with change and personal growth, even within a loving relationship we sometimes need to find strength within.
Harder read than anticipated, lots of insight, makes me want to see them in person.
