Lucky Ducklings (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

This true rescue story is a remarkable picture book with astounding illustrations that caught my eye and warmed my heart. A mother duck and her five ducklings were waddling along when the five ducklings slipped through the cracks of a storm drain. In sum, the town came together to rescue the ducklings and reunite them with their mother. Without the collaboration of the townspeople, and the use of the resources available, the retrieval of the ducklings would not be possible. This book goes to show all that can be accomplished when everyone works together. It also expresses the love that a mother has for their children whether they are a duck or a human. You know you are reading a great picture book when the illustrations speak louder than the words on the page. Every illustration was extremely detailed and did not only go hand in hand with the words, they brought the story to life. Each page appeared as if it were animated, there was so much action in one picture. When the ducklings fell through the drain you could vividly see the mother’s worry without having to read what was actually happening. The author also incorporates the use of onomatopoeic language throughout the book to help the reader not only see, but also hear what was going on. This is a must read for any child of any age – even I enjoyed it! This is a great children's book. The story is very easy to read. I like how throughout the book, the author still lists the little ducklings the same way when addressing them. I also like how she goes back and forth between the language that a duck speaks (quack, quack) and what that translated into the human english language means. The illustrations match perfectly with the story. The illustrations are extremely realistic and shows exactly how the ducklings fell into the storm drain and what the city did to rescue the ducklings. I love the fact that this story is based on a true story so I believe that his makes the illustrations so much more real and intriguing.
