Ma, I'm Gettin Meself A New Mammy (2008) - Plot & Excerpts
A continuation of her last book "Ma, He sold Me for a Few Cigarettes." This book continues exactly where the last book left off with Martha going into the convent to get an education. However, she is pretty much denied an education and forced to do manual labor for the nuns. She is also an outsider in the convent and just wants to be loved, but her time there is still extremely lonely. Her one bright spot having her brothers and sisters come and stay for a bit during one Christmas. However she is away from Jackser, her stepfather, and that is one of the main things she is grateful for. I love her wit and humor telling the story and not letting her lot in life get her down. She knows she is going to be somebody someday and I believe that is how she makes it through the convent. I don't think I have visited Ireland yet so this book completes my visit to Ireland.Although I haven't read the first book about Martha's life this one starts when she's 13 and taken away from her abusive family and begins life in a convent school. As a 'street' child though she is never totally one of the group and the nuns treat her as an unpaid servant. Despite all this she continues to remain cheery and has dreams for the future and helps others less fortunate (as she knows what it is like to be there). I still can't get over how some of the incidents were allowed to happen.
