I became a big fan of Friedman with the Coldfire Trilogy. Legacy of Kings is the conclusion of The Magister Trilogy. I confess that when I read the first book in this series, I almost didn't go on to the second. I didn't like the story as much. But I did continue, and I don't regret that at all.Friedman always delivers unusual fantasy, sometimes very dark (which I enjoy), and sometimes slightly dark, like here. I was completely entranced by Celia's "Coldfire" Trilogy. And when she started the Magister Trilogy I was very excited. The first two books in the series were very good - but this one didn't quite live up to the others. In fact, I normally finish one of her books in a day or two, but this one...felt...forced - I think she may have been under some stress, deadlines no doubt, and was struggling to find a way to tie the loose ends together. I put it down for a few weeks, picked it up, put it down again - when I finished, it was satisfying, like a good burger, but something of a let down when you are expecting steak...
