This was a fun read but I can’t say I enjoyed it as much as Her Own Devices, the previous instalment in the series. Actually this is probably my least favourite in the series. Claire is off to the Americas in pursuit of Lord James and I can’t say I enjoyed the Wild West/airship/pirates setting very much. To be honest, the airship chases got very boring after a while and I felt the book dragged on quite a bit. Very little happens in terms of plot development and I can feel the Lord James part of the story going nowhere very fast.Still there are some good things in the book, especially as far as character development is concerned. The Mopsies are changing and it is nice to see them evolve out of their usual London setting. The relationship between Claire and Andrew is also changing (we know where this is going but still…) and Alice’s character is a nice addition to the cast. Magnificent Devices lacks inspiration and is not as exciting a read as the rest of the series but it still is quite entertaining. While still over the Atlantic, they are boarded by pirates and hijacked to a spot near Santa Fe. In addition, Claire’s ex-fiance keeps trying to obtain her cooperation through blackmail while also pursuing his own financial ends. The Wild West provides a truly wild adventure for this group as they make new friends and deal with various obstacles.

Enjoyable as always, although I do wish they were a bit longer.
