Manhood For Amateurs CD: The Pleasures And Regrets Of A Husband, Father, And Son (2009) - Plot & Excerpts
Almost 4 stars. It reads like a collection of short stories...you can skip a few chapters or stories and not miss much. I knocked it down a star because I found too many stories not worth finishing. The ones i liked, I LOVED. Insightful, humorous, poignant. He speaks as a parent, and an imperfect one. I found myself appreciating those stories best. His other commentaries about his other roles in life were compelling as well. Again, my main criticism is that he seemed to run out of steam....after about halfway through, the stories were a little rocky and rambling. Chabon's stories of growing up and having your own children are sentimental and thought provoking. One of my favorite points he made was about this generation's children lacking the freedom of exploring on their own without the supervision of parents. Kids aren't allowed to ride their bike a few miles from home and get a little lost finding their way back anymore. Also, I loved his story about turning his kids into nerds.

I just cannot relate to this guy as a human being. Maybe this book is great, I don't really know.

Essays on fatherhood and manhood with lots of references to comics. Mostly boring.
