Manolito Gafotas (1994) - Plot & Excerpts

Summary:Manolito has donned the nickname of Four-Eyes. All of the cool people have nicknames in Manolito's eyes. His best friend is Big Ears, but he also hangs out with the One-And-Only Susana (who is the girlfriend to everyone), Ozzy the Bully, and Paquito Medina (who is super smart). This group of kids seem to get into more trouble than they know what to do with. Manolito hangs out in the park, attempts to copy in class, watches Tasmanian Devil cartoons with the One-and-Only Susana in order for her to become his girlfriend, and even gets punched by Ozzy the Bully. He constantly breaks his glasses and gets chewed out by his mother. My thoughts:This is a short novel that will keep you laughing throughout. Manolito is a character that reaches many ages. While I often feel that he is younger than 10 in his actions, because he seems so oblivious to his behaviors, he also speaks with a higher level of vocabulary than a general 10 year old. I also feel like the mistakes that he makes and the freedom that he has would fit the intended audience better than a younger child even though the reading level could probably go down to a high second grade level. Overall, this is a very quick, very fun read that will leave young and old giggling about the misadventures of Manolito Four-Eyes, his filthy feet gang, and Super Prostate Grandpa.

What do You think about Manolito Gafotas (1994)?

Get in touch with your inner grade school self, and get a little cultural enlightenment while you're at it, by reading Manolito Four-Eyes. Manolito is a 10-year-old schoolboy in Madrid, and the Four-Eyes refers to the fact that he wears glasses. He lives with his parents, his little brother whom he nicknamed The Bozo, and his grandfather. Using fun phrases like "bore galore" and "whole lotta cool", Manolito describes his life as a young boy who constantly gets in trouble. Luckily, he's got a terrific grandpa who usually gets him out of it. This is the Spanish version of the Nicholas books, the Alvin Ho books, and the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books. Go ahead, enjoy being a kid again!

“My name is Manolito Garcia Moreno, but if you come to my neighborhood and ask the first guy that passes by, ‘Excuse me, please, Manolito Garcia Moreno?’ – one of two things will happen. The guy will shrug, or he’ll mutter something like: ‘Hey, beats me.”That’s because nobody knows me as Manolito Garcia Moreno, not even Big Ears Lopez, and he’s my best friend; even though sometimes he can be a dog and a traitor (and other times, a dog traitor), he’s still my best friend and he’s a whole lotta cool.In Carabanchel – that’s the name of my neighborhood in Madrid, in case I haven’t told you – everyone knows me as Manolito Four-Eyes. Everyone who knows me, of course. People who don’t know me don’t know that I’ve worn glasses since I was five years old. Well, that’s their loss.” (opening paragraphs)This book as rly cute and funny.I seriously loved this book when I read it, and when u read it, you'll be rofl till the end.
