Marty is a spunky third grade girl who loves to get dirty and is disappointed to discover she has been cast as a princess in the school play. Brain Floca's illustrations add humor to this delightful story! My daughter and I laughed out loud several times while reading this book together. (Themes include: acting, The Frog Prince fairytale, improvisation rules and games, theater vocabulary, changing friendships and acceptance of others, frog science facts, reference to Jane Goodall and Beverly Cleary) This book was selected as part of the Global Read Aloud. My third graders and I read and collaborated with other 3rd grade classes in book discussions. This is an entertaining read for 2nd and 3rd graders. We ended up by default with this book because I had recently done an after school 3rd-5th grade book club with the other choice "Out of My Mind". Marty turned out to be delightful and I plan to read the other books in the series by Kate Messner.
There were some pretty funny parts in the story. I especially liked how the actual play turns out :)
