A red box rest on Bradley’s desk. He sat in his chair, his hands folded, looking somewhat satisfied. He nodded at the box for the third time. Becky sat across the desk, in the same chair where it all began a month ago. She felt distant from Bradley, too distant, but this was how he operated. He didn’t need to use words to explain Becky’s place in his life, he simply did it by action. Becky reached for the box and touched it. It was a silky box, something certainly expensive. “Stand up,” Bradley said. “Open it.” Becky stood and touched the thick white bow on the lid of the box. Her hands moved down to the lid and she pulled. She had to be honest with herself, her mind ran rampant on what could have been in the box. Diamonds. Jewels. The keys to more vehicles. Maybe a full set of keys to a large house. Becky felt greedy thinking that way, but ultimately a fantasy burned inside her. She was in the presence of wealth, of a man with money she couldn’t fathom. She had once seen over ten thousand dollars in her personal bank account, that being the most amount of money she ever saw at one time on a bank statement.
