Mermaid And The Shoe, The (2014) - Plot & Excerpts
Minnow feels invisible and talentless in the sea of her 50 sisters. But when she goes on a quest to find the meaning of a shoe, she discovers her valuable traits: curiosity, adventurousness, and imagination. The message and storytelling in this book are charming, but I found the cast of characters somewhat flat. Why are all the sisters virtually identical but for their accessories? Why are they defined by their talents and little else? With fifty sisters to choose from, only 4 receive names including the protagonist, and none are kind to the curious minnow. I wish there was a little more to this book, but it is far more substantive than many other mermaid books you may find. Minnow is the youngest of King Neptune's 50 daughters, and she is struggling to find the one thing that she is good at. In her quest to find that one thing, she seems to only be good at asking useless questions, until one day when she finds a shoe - and goes on a quest to get her questions answered. This is a really cute story and I loved the adorable illustrations and the way minnow describes different things in the human world as she would relate them in the mermaid world (e.g. a human is half-mermaid, half octopus; but with only two legs).
