Another haunting tale that mixes romance and gore. This spine tingling story will leave you thinking about it long after it’s ended. What makes people a monster? Is it the things they do? Perhaps the way they think. What if their moral compass is skewed but oddly justified? Then the line between good and evil goes gray. That’s where you’ll fine Reign. It’s also the heart of where Ms. Dark lives. Her thought proving plots make us feel things maybe we think we shouldn't, and that’s the beauty of a well written tale. This is a story of a killer who realizes he has a heart after all, and the mask wearing captive who peels back her layers and examines what exists at her core. I highly recommend this one. But be prepared it's dark ,bloody, and addicting. Once again, Aubrey Dark takes us on a tour into a serial killer’s mind. Unlike Gavriel, who’s a rogue murderer, Rien is a government sanctioned plastic surgeon/serial killer. Officially he gives people on the run a new identity, a new face. Unofficially, he paid for doing what he likes; torturing people on his operating table. He can’t stand FAKE people, and essentially peels if off them, layer by bloody layer before he kills and incinerates them in his oven.His latest job calls for him to dispose of un unscrupulous businessman and his jaded wife, but instead of wanting to kill her, he is immediately drawn to the woman he’s strapped down to his operating table. She only narrowly escapes her fate when he discovers that she is indeed a character actress who’s been hired to play the part of his wife. Still, the government demands two sets of teeth, and until he can find the real wife, Sara’s life is forfeit. Even if he does want to keep her.The themes are intriguing. Is this real or is this fake? What is reality? What lengths are you willing to go to to save yourself? What lies buried behind the masks we wear and what will happen when someone finally strips you bare and see to the heart of you?I loved getting just a small glimpse of Gavriel, still struggling with his “addiction” but trying so very hard to do the right thing for the sake of his kitten. Additionally, I did like the name author chose for this anti-hero. Rien is the French word for “nothing”…. Which begs the questions, who is HE when you strip away his serial killer persona.More open ended than the first book, as well as a little more – shall we say; descriptive, when it comes to the torture scenes. Theirs isn't Hollywood ending, because nothing perfect is real... But never fear, Mine isn't intensely dark and twisted. Well, perhaps just a little bit...Hopefully, we’ll get to hear Vale’s tale next.4 stars.
