Miss Julia Hits The Road (2004) - Plot & Excerpts

I do enjoy most of my time spent with Miss Julia and her cast of friends and acquaintances. Having said that it seems that in every book Miss Julia has to do something that is so totally stupid as to be almost enough to make me stop reading the book. Nothing different this time there is that one "duh" thing. I realize it moves the story forward, I realize it creates a lot of tension but really, couldn't someone *else* do the stupid thing instead of this remarkable smart woman? I did have to laugh at the whole "ride a Harley" theme, Miss Julia is convinced that only people who are in motorcycle "gangs" are in clubs and they are all like Hells Angels. When she finds out that Sam has joined a club and that Mr. Pickens has encouraged him to join *his* club, I had flashes of memories. Memories of stories about Sturgis and the annual Rally that takes a town of about 5,000 souls and brings in about 500,000 bikers, most of whom are the nicest people in the world who just like to ride motorcycles and have fun for a week or 10 days.No one dies in this story so it doesn't qualify as a "murder mystery" but it is a good read, always assuming you can get past that TSTL moment.

Miss Julia is a conventional Southern woman of a certain age. This book is the fourth in the series but the first one that I've read. I picked up 7 books in the series at a library sale because they looked to be an American South version of the Miss Read books. Like the Miss Read books, this series turned out to feature a strong female main character who has survived some of life's trials and continues to be confronted with small-town tribulations that need solving. There is a little humor and there is nothing nasty. Safe to pass on to your mother when you are done with it. Although not nearly as bad as Brer Rabbit for example, the author uses dialect throughout the book like "bid-ness" (for business) to indicate the bad guy and "this be what you hearin'" to indicate black characters.

What do You think about Miss Julia Hits The Road (2004)?

How hard can you laugh when reading a book? If it's the Miss Julia series the answer is hard enough to cry and get a headache.Miss Julia needs to raise money to save Miss Lillian's neighborhood from being bulldozed. A very large donation has been offered if she rides in a poker run. To say that the whole situation was comical is an understatement. A quote from Miss Julia Takes A Ride:"Hazel Marie finished by tucking the sides of my coat under each leg, where I hoped it would stay, else everybody was going to get glimpse of Christmas from the new opening she'd cut in her prized leather pants."I'm still laughing about this book. On to the next one!

Miss Julia is a straight laced older southern woman. This makes for some hilarious scenarios. I wavered between two stars and three and settled on three only because I got a huge belly laugh out of the middle of the book that left me in tears and giggling from time to time for about an hour later - any book that can make me laugh like that does not deserve two stars. Squeaky Clean? - they take the Lord's name in vain every page it would seem and there are a couple cuss words. Also, there is a running gag about what some water from a spring does to the male anatomy that Miss Julia herself would find highly inappropriate.

Miss Julia is becoming increasingly concerned about her gentleman friend, Sam, who has suddenly started wearing cowboy boots, sending her flowers, and writing bad poetry. And when he shows up on a Harley-Davidson Road King and asks her to hop on, she's convinced he's lost his mind. Meanwhile, her invaluable housekeeper, Lillian, has been evicted from her home by her greedy landlord. Deciding that Lillian's need is greater than her own fear (not to mention loss of dignity), Miss Julia takes Sam up on his offer and sets off on a motorcycle Poker Run to raise some fast cash. Fourth in the Miss Julia series.
