I’m not even really sure what to say about this book. Part of me thought it was pretty terrible, but then another part of me thought it was strangely good. The writing itself was bad and the plot was beyond predictable. There were all these attempts to create misunderstandings and I could see through all of them. Also, just because you give your characters a sad background story doesn’t mean that they are well-developed. For a book that is almost 600 pages, the characters were these hokey caricatures. Towards the end, people were having these emotional revelations and I honestly didn’t care. However, as bad as it was at times, there was something entertaining about it. You have to give Tyra props for originality. It was so kooky and weird that somehow it worked. The highlight of things had to be the relationship between Tookie and Bravo. Oh my god, it was so ridiculous! The whole lip virginity situation was so corny. There was a scene at the end involving kissing with tongues and references to a mirror. I seriously cringed reading that scene.Overall, I guess this is a confused ‘I liked it… I think’ moment. To be honest, I’d probably read the sequel. If Tyra meant for this to be a spoof, then she really succeeded. But if this was meant to be serious, I’m feeling serious secondhand embarrassment for her. At first when I read this book I liked it.Then I read it again. And…It's pretty bad.So bad it's good. The storyline is all over the place. Are they in another world or some sort of model-obsessed version of America? I don't know, but I have to find out, even though it makes no sense. And the characters! Almost all of them are annoying, but there are a few gems (Piper, Dylan, and Kamalini to name a few.) But most if them are extremely annoying. And the actual Modelland? It's like americas next top model on acid. There's magic, modeling and violence all mushed together. First everything is all magical and colorful and happy, then all if a sudden there's self harm going on. What? The book is just all over the place. But it is enjoyable as shit.
What do You think about Modelland (2011)?
My rating: 1.5. Sometimes I enjoyed it and other times I was wondering what on earth I was reading.
