Moi Ambrose Roi Du Scrabble (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

I found this author late. I had seen this book in the library for years but I never picked it up. A few colleagues had read the book and raved about it but I was resistant. This also held true for her latest book, The Journal of Henry K. Larsen where I just did not like the cover. However, with that book, I picked it up because everyone was raving. I could not put it down and the same goes with this book. What this books is about:Ambroise is a 12 year old with many issues - fatherless, severe peanut allergy, and basically socially awkward. His mother moves them around a lot but the story takes place in Vancouver where they are renting a basement from a nice Greek couple. This is where the fun starts. Ambroise befriends their recently paroled son and they end up joining a scrabble club. Of course, mom does not know so there is a lot of sneaking around. Ambroise learns a lot about himself through this new friendship as well as through the scrabble club. What I thought:Absolutely fantastic. I picked it up last night and finished it this morning. Nielsen has a way of creating characters that are loveable in their own quirky ways. She also has a knack for writing humorous stories that have a lot of issues. I loved the idea of the scrabble club and how Ambroise interacted with the members. I also enjoyed his relationship with Cosmos. The ending with a little too tidy but was comepletely satisfactory.Recommendation: READ READ READ I loved this book and finished it immediately! I found it as I was going through the shelves and read, "This book is peanut-free!"; I knew I HAD to read it right away. This book brought me to tears at times. I've experienced bulling before, so I can relate to Ambrose's suffering. Moving from place to place and making new friends can be very difficult. Adjusting to your new neighborhood and finding a place to fit in among is a challenge in it's own and along with that, financial problems. I thought this book would be a light read, but it made me very emotional and I've grown very attached to the story. All in all, I would recommend this book to anyone, and everyone who enjoys reading, and even if you don't, you should take chances, just like Ambrose did. He had every reason to not befriend Cosmo, but because of their friendship, Ambrose experienced many new things which he otherwise would not have.
