Monkey Mind: A Memoir Of Anxiety (2012) - Plot & Excerpts
At first I thought this book was hilarious, and that very quickly it summed up many of the things I've struggled with my whole life. Then it got repetitive and boring to me. I still think that it would be a good book for my husband to read to gain a little insight into my "monkey mind." But I'm pretty sure he will find it obnoxious. The good thing about the book is that I think it will help you put your own anxious thoughts in perspective and make you realize how ridiculous they can be at times. If you've struggled with anxiety, then you will easily understand how quickly those thoughts spin out of control. I would say that I really liked 60% of the book for sure. When I first started reading this book, I was turned off by the first description of a threesome gone wrong, I thought 'oh no....Another one of those tawdry books built on over sharing sex, moods and suffering to get in the express line to fame and fortune on the Oprah circuit. Fortunately, Daniel's writing kept me engaged, because my cynical first impression was wrong.Yes, there are lots of uncomfortable moments in this book - but it's because of the authenticity Daniel brings to the subject. At the same time, he also brings in funny moments. For people with anxiety, this is a wonderful book, to read and remember we're not alone.
