Most Beautiful Walk In The World: A Pedestrian In Paris (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

After a week long study in Paris early this year it was interesting to see the city through the eyes of someone else, even more so from the eyes of someone that has given walking tours and turned something that is a part of their everyday life into something to display(or share depending on how skilled you are). That being said, as much as I enjoyed reading the book I found it hard to relate to the author because as authenic as the bars and cafes he went were they were way out of the average man's price range and I'm very certain would be out of Hemingways. The good news is that while waiting for the deployment check to payout I felt making hard food choices gave me the chance to really become immersed in Paris and where the standard person would find a nice "classic" cafe or restaurant to go to for lunch I myself found it much better (and cheaper) to order a baguette in broken French from the baker, request the cheapest great looking French cheese by pointing (hoping you picked well) and find a hunk of sausage from the closest French grocery because I could not for the life of me hunt down a butcher that was open. The best part is that I was able to find all of this things along the Rue Mouffetard which at the time I assumed was just the closest market street to my hotel, but in reality was so much more. Along these streets I was also able to find a small cafe that serves a three course meal for nine euro when the money stash allowed it. Not the best most fancy place of course, but it fills you and wine is just as good and cheap.Le Petit Cafe Address: 6 Rue Descartes (just keep walking along Rue Mouffetard in the direction of Notre Dame and it will turn in to Rue Descartes)All that aside he did have some good history to talk about and the tips he added about the lesser known bits of Paris will make it even more of an adventure the next chance I go. I really need to read or at least recall book descriptions better. Once again, I mistakenly downloaded a memoir enmeshed in what I thought was a guide book. The beginning of the book is more memoir than guide, but subtly, the author starts to finally describe the walks that aren't walks at all: merely facts and anecdotes about various neighborhoods. The actual route is left to you (or your Rick Steve's guidebook), but the included history is both amusing and superbly researched with a focus on 1920s Paris.
