Started out a bit troublesome with Amy marrying Charlie, who was abusive. After, two kids, several miscarriages and lots of abuse..Amy finally decided no more. She would continue being a good wife but only if that meant no sex and violence. Charlie, agreed! Just when things seemed to be going well-- for once-- tragedy beacons Amy's door once again. Is Amy's first born dead? Good book! Simple! Directly following the first in this series, I doubt if a new reader would be able to sort out all the family members. The novel is a bit long, with some passages having no real reason for inclusion. A example of this was how hot and tired Charlie was looking after clearing some bush, this lead the reader into thinking of his possible early demise. Still good to read a New Zealand story, with a local setting and interwoven with real historical events.

Interesting enough to make me start book #3 in the series
