Muffins And Mayhem: Recipes For A Happy--if Disorderly--Life (2010) - Plot & Excerpts
Another book club book, I didn’t care for this one at all. The promo blurb says something about her ‘happy, loving voice’, but I found her voice to be whiny and self-absorbed. She called her childhood ‘difficult’; her parents both worked, and they left her lists of chores to complete when they got home – waaah. She got pregnant as a teenage and her parents didn’t send her away like the parents of a classmate had, so she had to stay and endure the gossip of the small-town folks – waaah. She almost never mentions her children (other than to say she had one as a teenager), though she does mention how good her husband is to her (self-absorbed). And the recipes were extremely bland. The book was taken from her daily posts at her on line book club. I think this text should have stayed on the screen. I impulsively checked this out from the library. It caught my eye with the subtitle; Recipes for a Happy (if disorderly) Life. I'm a sucker for this sort of thing and the cover looked very cheerful. ANYHOW...I would recommend this as a perfect little book to read while lying in bed with a bad cold. It's easy to take up and put down. It's not great literature, but it's charming and funny and oddly inspiring. The author is kind of goofy. She has had to overcome some big stuff in her life but she keeps soldiering on with a cheerful attitude. I like that. She has done many things in her life, but now runs the DearReader.com website. You can sign up to get a couple of chapters of a book sent to you via e-mail so that you can sample it to see if you want to get the book and read it. In addition, she has a blog attached to the site and posts daily. I just checked it out and it looks interesting. I may try it out for awhile to see if I want to follow it. Final review...fun, but check the book out of the library. It's not a keeper.
