Mumbai New York Scranton: A Memoir (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

I was already familiar with the Shopsin's from the cookbook and the documentary, but I didn't know anything else other than the crotchety dad and his restaurant. Well, this book was a delightful and wonderful surprise. I liked pretty much everything about this memoir/journal/travel diary. Tamara's writing is charming and quick-witted and I'm totally won over by her story. It's funny because a few weeks ago I found myself checking out small towns in PA with Lithuanian populations (I know, kinda weird) and stumbled upon Scranton. It looked like a great place to live with cheap real estate (compared to Vancouver) and now I'm even more curious. Mumbai New York Scranton, I dig it. I'll recommend this book to friends. This book should really have a warning on the cover:This is what it's like to be an entitled white American in India and then the hospital where you are clearly better and more important than anyone else.Seriously, a memoir should make someone likable. Not make you feel like you'd rather never, ever meet them, because they have too much smug hipster American tendencies. That last, that's what this book makes you feel like. I struggled to even have sympathy for the medical plight she found herself in and I'm an insanely empathetic person. Maybe because it felt like it didn't affect her so much as just annoy her that it was taking time out of her day.Eh. Really, just pass on it.

What do You think about Mumbai New York Scranton: A Memoir (2013)?

The best book about Scranton I've read all year. (It's just barely tangentially about Scranton.)
