it surprised me. really. so much better than i expected. it was... different from the other mina esguerra books I've read before. maybe because i have a soft spot for long overdue romances. i liked the flashbacks and how close jasmine and zack was. it was also fun to read his three exes -two real and one imaginary - together. and i even almost cried at the scene when jasmine finally realized she's in love with zack. i also like zack, even the fact that he's the type of person who doesn't want to get too close to anyone, except jasmine. it was cute. and it made me feel a little dreamy. it was exactly the right book to read when you want to just relax and enjoy. my imaginary ex now rivals fairytail fail for my most-favorite-mina-esguerra-book. i even think i like my imaginary ex a little better right now. I am happy to report that I started this year reading Philippine lit and while Mina V. Esguerra’s My Imaginary Ex might not be a top-of-the-head choice or recommendation for college lit professors out there, I’m also glad to report that none of my brain cells went to waste when I read this. The plot may not be that original – young love grown into true love between college best friends who have shared a secret lie – but believe me, it’s in the way Esguerra writes it. The dialogues are snappy; the characters are unpretentious, and the path towards the end was honestly unpredictable. Only a few Filipino chick lit writers can do this, so go and pick this one up.
