My Mom Is Trying To Ruin My Life (2009) - Plot & Excerpts
As a literacy teacher, I would use this book to prompt discussion about rules and why they are set. In the story, the main character felt her parents were trying to ruin her life by enforcing rules such as an eight o'clock bedtime. The main idea is parents (also teachers)do what they do and have rules, in order to, keep you safe because they love you. I think students are likely to interact with this text because many students are able to relate. Many students think rules are created for punishments rather than safety precautions. The author and illustrator do a great job in putting it into the perspective of a child. Like I said, many students will be engaged because they have been in similar situations. I have chosen this as a part of my text set, because I will be talking about families. So, this text will allow me to bring in ideals of family rules and why they are very important! A friend of mine gave me this book after reading my nearly daily status updates on Facebook about the trials and tribulations of raising two girls, ages 4 and 8. Both are very independent in their own ways, and my 8 yo in particular has reached the stage at which point Mom is no longer funny or cool in any respect whatsoever. In fact, I'm out to ruin her life. This book is perfect for the mother of a kid who thinks she's too big for her britches. I look forward to reading it to my daughters and laughing about the ridiculousness involved.

Silly story but as a child, we all go through this - and regret it afterwards.
