Myriah Fire (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

Myriah Fire by Claudy Conn takes the reader to England in 1813. Most of the Claudy Conn books that I have read have just a trace of the paranormal at least with Seelie Fae or time travel or something to bring the reader to Scotland at the time of the Druids. This book to my great pleasure did none of those things. I enjoy the writing style of Claudy Conn and also that of Scotland Highlands, but this book was a pleasant surprise. It's main character Lady Myriah Whitney has found herself an older lady of the ton at the age of twenty one. She has not after three seasons of a London Season found a husband and she herself is no hurry to do so. Her mother has died and her father has honored her wishes to "marry for love". She has a substantial dowry and Sir Roland Keyes a gentleman fallen on hard times is courting her with zest because her wishes to have her money, not because he loves her. She decides to run away as her father catches her kissing Sir Roland before her father can announce their engagement. When she ran away, she was going to her grandfather's house but took a wrong turn and found a young man injured by the roadside. She took him to his house and found that he lived in a grand house but did not live as grandly as the house itself implied. There were no servants but for a daytime cook and her two lads and the house was in a sad state. Myriah nursed the young man, tended his wound, and the reader thinks for a second that there will be a romantic interest between them. But it is not to be, they become close but he is more like a brother she never had. His brother "Kit" Wimborne, sixth Viscount of Wimborne Towers, was another story indeed. The two of them have an instant chemistry on meeting. Their meeting is humorous and fun, but also the basis for their future relationship. We follow the three of them as the younger Wimborne, William or Billie as he is known slowly recovers from the gunshot wound he had sustained when Myriah found him. The reader learns that the brothers are involved in smuggling and it is in the time that England was at war with France. So smuggling is considered to be treasonous to the Crown.Sir Roland is in pursuit and so is her father. This is a fun book, with a bit of adventure sprinkled into the romance part of it. It is unlike any of the Claudy Conn books that I have read, but a delight to read from the first page to the last. It leaves the reader wanting to know more. Myriah Fire was a rather enjoyable book. Myriah is a rather unusual girl for her time period, with a unusual father and grandfather who tend to dote on her and give her far more freedom to do as she pleased than any other male figure would do. However when Myriah is caught kissing one of her suitors her father demands that they announce their engagement, an engagement that Myriah is bound and determined to avoid. Setting off to go and stay with her grandfather, Myriah and her groom take a wrong turn in the fog and end up quite lost before they stumble upon a wounded William Wimborne. After saving Bill's, William, life Myriah decides to stay and nurse him back to health as he refuses a doctor. Enter Kit, a few days after Bill's injury Lord Kit Wimborne returns home and discovers his new house guest, naked, in his bed. Myriah and Kit are instantly drawn towards one another, yet they clash at almost every meeting. ^and that's all you get, partially because im tired, and partially because I'm not giving anything more away. I really enjoyed this book, I'm not sure if Myriah's character is really believable but she is strong, quick witted and quite fun to read about. I'm not sure why I'm not giving this 4 starts, the only thing that I might have wanted more of would have been some further development in the Smuggling/Spy part of the story.
