Naked Economics: Undressing The Dismal Science (2002) - Plot & Excerpts

This was a fascinating overview of myriad topics in, and through the lens of, economics. Taking out most of the boring, rote information we remember from economics classes (how to calculate this and that), we are left with a far more exciting journey that explains many processes in the economic world with with a young person (like myself) might be confused or even willfully ignorant of. After all, when economics is traditionally considered boring, why would you pay attention to it?It also is shockingly balanced for an America writer. We generally tend to either overpraise or completely condemn our country, but the author explained rather frankly the outcomes of various countries' choices, without much judgement. Perhaps more wonderfully, he explained why two economists may look at the same, specific problem, and come up with two valid, but completely different, methods of solving it.I heartily recommend this book to anyone else who feels that economics is too important a topic to overlook, but who has been actively avoiding learning about it. Why would someone like me, educated and experienced in business, economics and finance pick up this book? Simple. Clients! Clients who need important concepts and principals explained in understandable fashion without my rambling along with all the jargon and obfuscation that often accompanies discussions on economics. Reading Wheelan helps me frame the important ideas in meaningful fashion. Frankly, I'm amazed at how much he can cover without a single equation, formula, chart or graph. This is how the basics should be taught. If more people understood the basics, we would probably be dealing with much saner policies. As he puts it in his closing comments - "Economics offers insights into wealth, poverty, gender relations, the environment, discrimination, politics - just to name a few of the things we've touched upon. How could that possibly not be interesting?"
