Bella’s first glimpse of the Volturi is a painting at the Cullen house, which depicts the aristocratic vampires in the 1800s, standing on a balcony and looking down upon a “bacchanalian party scene,” as Eric Pascarelli put it. In one of the magical transitions of the film’s narrative style, the camera pushes into the painted scene and takes the story back into the past.
    “We shot the Volturi actors on a balcony set, what would be the top half of the painting,” Pascarelli explained. “We took a single frame as our hero frame, and an actual painting was based upon that. It was a very complex shot for us, because the camera pushing in had to blend perfectly into this vertically framed painting and transition to live action.”
    There would be two looks for the Volturi, one for that scene from the 1800s, another for contemporary time. Each look would emphasize the social order with the highest being Aro, one of the three “ancients,”
