New York Mordene (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

I love Walter Mosley books, but have a hard time with Leonid McGill books. He doesn't seem as well drawn as other Mosley characters. In this book Leonid McGill has several problems. He has decided to turn his life around and follow the straight and narrow. Therefore he cannot leave his wife, who has affairs and leaves him all the time, so he stops seeing his girlfriend, Aura. His son has fallen in love with a former prostitute whose pimp will not free her. He is hired to find a girl who is being looked for by killers so he needs to find her first. Worst of all, his mentor, Gordo, the man who saved him as a young boy and boxing coach, has cancer and is dying. Gordo will be staying at Leonid's home after the hospital. All the problems lead to beatings, killings and calling his friend, a hit man, for help. Not a typical book for me to read, but was pleasantly surprised to find I really enjoyed it. If you like suspense, Mosley is your man. My only complaint is that the ending gets resolved (so to speak) too quickly. For all that suspense, I wouldn've liked a stronger, longer ending. Instead of feeling like Mosley ended it because he felt like it was time to stop writing. For me the book is asking to go on a little bit more and if it had I would've given it another star. Or two.

Best Mosley book, in awhile, enjoyed it much more than the first Leonid McGill book.
