This is the third book in the Infinity Ring Series. Although it can be read a s a stand alone, it is much better read in order as part of the series. Dak, Sera, and Riq have use the Infinity Ring to travel through time and fix the breaks in history. They appear in the year 1850 during the time of the Underground Railroad. Pair this fictional tale with nonfiction readings of this time period to help students discover breaks in history themselves as they read along. There is also a guide with puzzles and a preview of the next book in each book, as well as a code to allow them to play the online game. The online component also helps students learn the true historical facts so that they understand what is fiction and what is fact within the novel. Yes, the topic of slavery is a somber one, but I think the author is trying to be mindful of her elementary school audience. The characters' reactions are quite in line with their readers' thoughts and sense of humor too. I did not feel they took slavery trivially, particularly in the case of Riq. I think this would be thought provoking for young readers who have difficulty thinking of life-experiences beyond their own. What choice would they make if there was a possibility that saving the life of others might cause them to personally suffer a great loss?I've known since I picked up book one that this is a multi-platform series, but I have not done any of the online games or story lines yet. That wasn't a problem for book two, but I really felt something missing in this volume. Many, many references were made to previous breaks, including the online extensions of the story. I suppose I will have to check out the online games to see what I'm missing.
