O Escolhido Foi Você (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

"It Chooses You" is the quirky tale of Miranda July and her adventures interviewing various people she finds in the Los Angeles Pennysaver, mainly as inspiration as she wrote the script for her movie, "The Future." This was a light, easy read that I devoured in one day while I was in-between novels. It's not often that I pick up a book with pages accompanied by photographs, but in this book it added so much charm. July's wit and dead-pan humor is so relatable, and as with her other works, I was laughing at loud at certain parts. I deducted only one star solely because I wished I had felt a bit more of an emotional connection with the characters. This is entirely my own personal taste, however. This is of course with the exception of the last character, Joe, who was the only person from the Pennysaver interviews that ended up with a part in the film. His story was sweet, endearing, and most of all - very real. Overall, I would definitely suggest picking up this quick, fun read; especially if you like cats, because cat pictures are plastered all over the front and back covers, and that's just adorable. This book went back and forth for me. I started reading it a few times and just couldn't get into it, then I read a little more and finally last night it kind of took off for me. If you like to read about people and their quirks (and believe me, there are some quirks in here) then you will like this book. I especially liked the story at the very end although it was sad. There really are some interesting people out there in the world and no two are alike. Sometimes that's a good thing, sometimes not so much. We could do with more of the sort of kindness that some of the people in this book showed to others.

What do You think about O Escolhido Foi Você (2011)?

I read the entire thing in one day. It was light and enjoyable, filled with little gems of true art and perspective wrapped up in a more understated path. Kind of a documentary of her film The Future and well as her creative process, I would recommend this book to procrastinating writers and artists. There is a lot of talk about making art and even more about NOT making art, which can sometimes be even more significant. Charming because it's embarrassing, funny because it's true -- I love Miranda July.
