He whispered a suggestion in Alicia’s ear as he stepped away from her, leaving a respectable amount of space separating them. He faced the intruders with an attitude of unruffled calm. But underneath his urbane exterior he was cursing his own stupidity for allowing himself to become distracted by that damned waltz. His objective was to keep her alive, nothing more. He should have ensured she fully understood the dangers she faced before lowering his guard. Well, he’d just learned a timely lesson.
