Off With Their Heads: The Prequel To Alice In Deadland (2000) - Plot & Excerpts
While this book is a prequel to the Alice in Deadland series, it certainly should not be read first. It details the events that lead up to the Rising, some key players that Alice meets in the first book and what they were doing prior to and during the early days of the Rising. You also find out how the country becomes known as the Deadlands and how her mother settles on the name Alice for her unborn child. Alice's family, General Chen, Appleseed, Dr. Protima and Bunny Ears are all key players with very interesting back stories. Even though this is a prequel, I strongly suggest reading it as it was released - as the third book in the series. If you read it first then there may not be any surprises or "the big reveal" for you when Alice meets the Queen in book 1. I'm usually not a fan of prequels but after reading this one, I definitely am reconsidering my thoughts on them.I liked Protima's story, but it wasn't as dramatic as I thought it would be. I'm confused about the Edward they spoke of, is he the same one from the first two books? I really liked Robert Gladwell's back story. It was nice reading about little, unborn Alice already being a strong baby in her mother's stomach. I liked him in the first book, but reading his part of this book made me like him more. I also liked hearing about Chen before he became General. I thought it was interesting learning that before the outbreak he was already having doubts about his country's government. Last, but certainly not least, Bunny Ears! Knowing that I would learn his story in this book is the reason I jumped right in. Neil aka Bunny Ears had such a tragic story; growing up in a rough orphanage, working his ass off for everything he had, and trying his hardest to get the girl of his dreams to notice him. The saddest part of his story is knowing that he is going to become a Biter, but not knowing how or when it will happen. I almost wish this book would have been the first of the series instead of the prequel, but I really did enjoy this.
