On Her Master's Secret Service (2013) - Plot & Excerpts
Alex McKay and Eve St James work for McKay/Taggart Security Services, everyone bar the profiler is ex special forces. They are divorced and all we know about their marriage from previous books is that an op went wrong causing Eve to get hurt and their marriage to crumble. Now, Michael Evans is back, he is the man who Alex was chasing when he was FBI and who kidnapped and tortured Eve. Alex has never stopped loving Eve and wants to get her back. The information on Evans is passed to Alex by Kirsten, a journalist who's been working undercover. The more we learn about Kristen the more mysterious she gets. She is an expert hacker, managing to get into the FBI database and she knows how to defend herself and fight. The men notice the ways she carries herself and they think she has training but she insists she has never worked for any law enforcement agency. It's her motivations for her actions that makes them suspicious, why has she brought the team the information and why is she helping? She is kick ass, I loved her. She walks into the apartment after a fight and calmly mentioned there's a body in her boot she needs to dispose of.The team obviously care for each other a great deal. Ian is at the top, brusk and to the point but can be fatherly in his own way, steering them in the direction they need to go. They may fight between themselves but when it comes down to it they will be there to help each other. The characters have become more life like as the series continues and I have grown more fond of them. There is a great scene in a kitchen, it reads like an action story. After what appears to be an innocent conversation between Sean and Alex but where they are actually sharing intel, Sean's knife skills are put to work. The knife fight is just wow, amazing. As with the other books, at the end there is a cliffhanger which demanded that I read on.This author, in my opinion, is similar to Kaylea Cross and Cherise Sinclair. As in their books, we meet a group of people and each person is then the focus of their own book in the series; each book has it's own suspense plot but underlying the whole series there is a deeper running plot which we gradually learn about but isn't resolved until the end. The plots twist and turn continually leaving you unsure who is right, whether the mark is innocent.Again, there was humour in this book in the banter between team mates which I found amusing, for example:"Well, you forget her marshmallows. She's carrying our baby and you expect her to drink hot cocoa without marshmallows""Little Adam only responds to Serena now" This series just keeps getting better with every book. This is the story of Alex & Eve. We finally find out what happened to end their marriage, but not their D/s relationship. There is a good complicated mystery that is very well thought out and written. Great to have all my favorite genres in the same book. I'm going to try and enjoy it for a couple of days before starting Ian's story. Wish me luck :-)
