One Click: Jeff Bezos And The Rise Of Amazon.com (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

This was very disappointing. Many technology sites flagged this book as one of the top 5 'Technology industry biography' must reads along side other titles like 'Steve Jobs'. This book is no where near the same calibre and should NOT be on anyone's 'must read' list. The book is a 3rd party review of Amazon's history, but it becomes apparent very quickly that Jeff Bezos himself had no input to the book, rather the author based the entire book on hearsay, speculation on the author's part and 'stories' collected from public sources around the internet. The overall flow of the book is horrible, it starts out in 'present day' and bounces back and forth between the early days and more recent events which makes it very hard to read. After reading biographies and books surrounding companies like Apple, Google, Virgin and Starbucks I was left feeling inspired to get started and make my mark on the world. Why then, after reading One Click, do I feel the exact opposite? This is the story of Jeff Bezos but more accurately it is the story of the rise of Amazon.com and its ongoing mission to slowly take over the world. I may be guilty of indulgence in hyperbole with that statement but after finishing this book I don't think I am out by much. This book is a series of stories about how Jeff Bezos and Amazon as a whole has done everything in their power to make profits by putting other people out of business. That they have all but destroyed the high street book industry is well known but on top of this they have done their best to cripple publishers and authors alike in order to ensure that Amazon is the party that makes the most profit out of any situation. When you look at Amazon's growth throughout this book you will see the company constantly enter markets with the aim of crushing all opponents and coming out as the only winner in any scenario. On a small scale and maybe in a single market this would not be a big thing but over the course of this book it is hard not to see the intentions of Amazon take on a sinister edge. That being said this was still an interesting book. It concisely described a decade and more of the companies history as well as giving the reader a good insight into the company and its founder. I would however state that this felt brief for what was needed. After reading 'In the Plex' by Steven Levy which is the story of Google's rise over the same time period, I have to say this book falls far short. Every encounter in this book, whilst being concise and strait to the point, suffered by being under explored and almost a little rushed. So basically reading this book was not all that pleasant an experience. However, that being said I still would recommend it to readers who are interested in Amazon if for no other reason than the fact that it opened my eyes a bit on the subject.
