I'd give this a 3.5 if I could because until the last 30 pages I really liked this book. And I can't say I HATED the ending... I waffle back and forth on it. I appreciate that it wasn't a fairy tale but I don't think that it had a realistic ending either; which I guess might be a bit silly since it's another post apocalyptic story. A little scary since it seems like it could be almost real... and then the ending happened. I read this on the recommendation of a Buzzfeed article which said if you like Mean Girls, you'll like this book. It's probably having started with this premise that influenced my rating of this book. Yes, interesting. Yes, accurate reflection of some teenage girls' experiences during puberty and high school ages. Yes, grim with some dark humor. But I did feel much of it was derivative of other young-adult dystopian novels and certainly of The Stepford Wives. I therefore didn't find much original in this book, except the ending, but I finished it feeling defeated and bleak.
Beautifully written, yet shocking and eye opening...
