Ouran High School Host Club 17 (2010) - Plot & Excerpts
Haruhi is one of my favorite manga characters of all time. She is funny and strong even against a bushel of guys (strange kinds of guys by the way, but they are lovable too!) Even though all of the guys fit in their own individual stereotype that is exactly what makes the series as a whole so funny and enjoyable. The relationship between Haruhi and Tamaki is epic and I can tell you for a fact that I will be re-reading this series many times in the future!I would really recommend watching the anime too! This volume picks up with the dark themes of the last wherein Tamaki is being increasingly isolated by his grandmother and his father. Grandma is trying to get Haruhi sent abroad to get her out of her grandson’s life and dad has forced the school to suspend the host club.Through a series of Machiavellian moves, Tamaki’s father changes everything in the Suoh household and business. Kyoya, brilliant as he is, figures it out but not in time to warn Tamaki. To Tamaki’s father’s surprise, his son isn’t happy. Instead, he has made the young man miserable and Tamaki cuts himself off from everyone except the grandmother who still doesn’t want to have anything to do with him. Then in true “darkest before the dawn” fashion, the story makes a turn. The club learns Anne, Tamaki’s mother is recovering from her illness and is in Japan but even that doesn’t move Tamaki. In an ending that only works in rom-coms, Haruhi has to choose between Tamaki and Hikaru and then make sure the mother and son reunion happens. Things would never work like this in real life but isn’t that why people read rom-coms in the first place? There is a smattering of the usual OHSHC silliness in this but it is far more plot driven than earlier volumes would have hinted at. The story works within the confines that the super wealthy are just different than the rest of us and could pull something like this off. The emotions are spot on. I did not know that the series was ending with the next volume. After all, the host club could have gone on in year two (I didn’t see Tamaki’s family life being the major plot point to resolve after all) but you got the sense it was coming to a close with this. I am going to be very sad to finish out the final volume.
