I was excited to read this book as I search for more strong female characters for our middle school girls. Alice does not disappoint in this respect. Also, I appreciated the dual narrative and wondered how the two stories, those of Alice and Carter, would come together. The end is a perfect merging if the two. The only reason I gave the book 3 out of 5 stars is because the story, while original in its telling, feels familiar in its theme--corrupt leadership, rebels, the quest to restore what's right... I look forward to the next in the series. There have been a lot of dystopian books of late and I’ll be honest I have read a lot of them. But this one is different. Most are all about the aftermath and there are so many questions making me wonder how we got to this point. But with Paradigm that is not always the case. Sure I finished the book with questions but I fully expect for them to be answered in the other two books. The shift in time between Alice and Carter that shows the cause and affect really had me turning the pages. I had questions at the end of the book though. I REALLY hope they are answered with the coming copies. Like exactly why the rains? Was it worldwide or only local worldwide? In the 87 years since the floods how is it they were able to master freezing and reviving so ably? And if that is the case does that mean Alice may show up in future?I loved being in Alice’s mind and working through life’s problems with her. What I really like is how her love life is stated so matter of factly, almost without feeling, but it really isn't necessary to show range of emotion since that is not what the book is about.Carter easily changes his belief system but I think it is much easier for him to do based off his family history and things that are revealed along the way. It is almost as though he knew of them before hand and refused to see them for what they truly were until he had no choice.I am hungry for the next book and I have been thinking of this world since I read the last word. Please publish book 2 soon!I received this ARC for my honest review.
