This is the best parenting book I’ve read for 1 to 5 year olds! I think all parents of young children should read this book! It has helped me tremendously with my spirited 4 year old. It is the attachment parenting approach without the extremes of baby wearing 24 hours, co-sleeping, etc. The premise of the book is that the mother or other primary caregiver is like the North star to a child. If your child is defiant it is because there is a problem with his relationship with you, they do not respect you. This book coaches you how to remain calm and model a good example, so your child can mirror your example. It shows how to create a loving and strong bond with your child. It encourages playful parenting to dispel anxiety and tension in kids as well as no time-outs. The author advises how to help your children acknowledge and release powerful and overwhelming feeling to heal them, so they are not constantly bubbling under the surface causing problems. I love this book, because its suggestions are very simple and easy to implement. When I am in survival mode dealing with a toddler having a melt-down I can never remember the very cerebral theories of other parenting books. This book simply says to love them and provide an environment of calm and safety. This book had some great information, but it was at some points difficult to wade through. I loved many of the tips shared and I definitely related to many of the situations and stories presented. I liked how it walked you through how to handle many common parenting dilemmas. It just got a little repetitive and long-winded for me. However, I will definitely be using some of the tactics and insights shared.
