Oh my goodness. This IS the perfect picture book. Salina Yoon has made a curious and caring little penguin find a friend in a pinecone. Penguin sees that his new friend is cold so piles supplies on to his sled and takes him to a warmer climate. In just a few pages she has created a friendship that rivals any we have ever read before and sent us to the library cataloge to find more books about our new favourite hero - Penguin. A wonderful choice for fans of penguins, obviously, but Salina Yoon has created a friendship story that rivals any of our favourites - Cynthia Rylant, Kevin Henkes - and we can't wait to give this away to our favourite baby friends. It will touch your heart and might even make you cry. We give it 5 stars and 2 damp handkerchiefs. Great concept, cute illustrations, but somehow it just doesn't work for me. I guess I'm not quite whimsical enough to believe a pinecone can play with a penguin. Come to think of it, though, I didn't have too much trouble with the penguin playing with the pinecone, or making a scarf for it, or taking it back to the forest.... Well, I'm not sure of my exact reaction, but the bottom line is that I can imagine the appeal, and yet it's not quite magical for me.
