When someone answered, she started to say, “May I speak with Professor Hidalgo-Muller,” but she choked up. That’s when she realized how nervous she was. “Hello. Hello,” the woman on the other end of the line repeated. Emma tried to clear her throat. Then she got embarrassed and hung up the phone. At 9:30, she tried again hoping the department telephone didn’t have caller ID. This time she cleared her throat before she dialed, and even tested her question a few times out loud. “Hello,” she began. “May I speak with Professor Hidalgo-Muller?” “Who’s calling?” the voice on the line replied.
