I'm a big fan of Chinggay Labrador ever since she began writing for Seventeen magazine and Candy. I bought this book on a whim because I found out she was at the book fair and I really wanted to meet her. I am not a big fan of k-pop or Korean dramas so I wasn't able to connect with a book on a much deeper level but I'm big in fangirl-ism and pop culture, friendship and love which is probably why I still enjoyed reading it. It's a very light read and can be finished in one sitting. The plot line reminded me a lot of the Shopaholic series in a sense that I had so much hate for the protagonist at first (because of her impulsiveness and borderline stupidity) but the character grows on you and somehow, at some point, you get to love her inspite of everything. All in all, I recommend reading this for long train rides as it is not so heavy (literally and figuratively) and it's interesting enough to keep you preoccupied. Where to start? This is now one of my favorite books. It was an accidental find in the Filipiniana bookshelf at Fully Booked and I can't be any happier. Mainly it's about K-Pop fangirling and ohmygod-seo, it is so full of cuteness! The way the author wrote the book was so relatable, you'd start to believe it's about the fangirl in you.The story springs from Andie, a twenty-something who has had just a breakup from her longtime boyfriend. Now to channel her anger/denial (which thankfully wasn't too built up in the story 'cause that would be ugly and would ruin the whole fluffy vibe), one of her friends introduces her to the world of K-Pop and just UP went her life. From spending most of her LIFE on the couch in front of the Koreanovela-reeling TV to traveling ALONE to Japan (and of course, Korea) to go see her favorite KPop boy group's concert to actually hanging out with them and finally, finally meeting the "guy of her dreams," it's definitely a gripping story - in a very fandemonium-ly kind of way! I started reading it at midnight and by the time I finished around 3AM, I couldn't go to sleep anymore because I didn't want to let go the giddy feeling the book emanated. It's almost scary how I got so carried away with it. I most def recommend this to all who has had, still have, will have fangirling (fanboying??) days in their lives. Doesn't matter if it's on KPop or JPop or any other bands, artists or whatever because this book will be just as enjoying!
What do You think about Popped (2011)?
Super funny! Filipinos who are a fan of korean stars can really relate with this stories...
