Rabbit's Snow Dance (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

This is a traditional Iroquois tale. It is about Rabbit. And at one time Rabbit had a long, beautiful tail. It is summertime and Rabbit wants snow so it will be easier for him to reach the best leaves on the trees. And he is very impatient so he decides to sing his snow song.Despite protests from other animals, Rabbit sings his song and it snows and snows and snows until it reaches the tops of the trees.Rabbit is satisfied and decides to sleep. But summer has other plans. While Rabbit sleeps, the summer sun melts all the snow. And when Rabbit wakes up, he falls from the tree top he was on, losing bits of his tail along the way. This story teaches the need to be patient and not just care about what you want. I really enjoyed this book. Rabbit wants it to snow so he can reach the tender leaves in the tree. He performs a snow dance, resulting in piles and piles of snow. He falls asleep in the tree after eating his fill and ends up stuck when the snow melts. He falls out of the tree, tearing out a bit of his long fluffy tail on each branch as he falls. And that is how Rabbit lost his long beautiful tail. (What do you call stories that explain how an animal go the way that it is? I canNOT remember!!)Listeners will enjoy the repetition of Rabbit's snow song. The illustrations have a very vintage/retro feel.

A story about rabbit and how he ended up with the tail we are familiar with today.

Love Jeff Newman's art. I think the text goes on a "hare" too long.
