Rainbow Blues (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

I've already spent way too much money on books this month, but I simply could not resist the blurb on this one and simply had to have it and I don't regret making the purchase. The title, Rainbow Blues, originally referred to blue collared gay guys, but pretty early on in the book that angle was set aside and toward the end, the color blue got another meaning. Usually I'm not a fan of "forgetting" the originally setting of the story, but in this case I felt the author used it enough to establish Luke as a character. So much of whether or no I enjoy the book is dictated by if the MCs are likeable or, usualy for me, likeable assholes. In this case it was the former. Both Jimmy and Luke were characters I loved from the beginning. They were different enough and layered. The very pleasant surprise was how developed the secondary characters were and how much I'd like to read more about all of them. Luke's relationship with his son was great and realistic and Ryan was both interesting and heart-breaking as the son's best friend. For the readers who need explicit sex scenes or high amounts of sexual tension, that really isn't what this book is about. Yes, there are scenes with sex at the beginning, but it never has much of the focus, which I thought suited the over all tone. Not much else I can say about Rainbow Blues, other than it's a book I would recommend for almost anyone who reads m/m but especially for those just starting. I'm hoping the author will revisit the characters in other books. Somewhere between a 3.5 and 4* for me.Luke and Jimmy are both older - though still young in their late 30/early 40's. After meeting eyes across a croded room, they become fairly inseparable. The intimacy of their relationship is off page and I would have liked maybe one scene before heading into fade to black. If you are looking for a warm, fuzzy feeling 'Awww' story - here it is!It is very lovey and nice and warm and perfect - sometimes a bit too so but a nice read for that. For older characters, they still did the leaping to assumptions when waiting and talking was more in keeping with the earlier characterisation. An easy read, pacy and read quickly.
