3.75 starsI liked the introduction to the island and that we actually get to "see" some of what the castle has turned into. I love the detail about how it works, though some of it is vague.I wanted to love Darla, but there is something about her that keeps me from it. I don't hate her, but I have a hard time relating to her at times. I love Trevor and Joe definitely has his issues. In this one, they finally come together, though I don't think that their story is complete just yet as there are still some unresolved areas in their lives. I would like to read another one about them if the author decides to write it. I like the secondary characters and can't wait to read some of their stories like Liam's. :) 4.5The narrators' voices, though overpowering at times, are entertaining and well done. I laughed a lot while reading. I wasn't entirely thrilled with some of the avenues of the plot- the crazy ex thing is overdone, in my eyes, and the resolution to that aspect of the story just felt... off...That said, I really enjoyed the presentation of Darla, Trevor, and Joe's polyamorous relationship. It's hard enough to write two compelling characters for a romance novel, let alone three, and balance all of the relationship frictions. But Julia Kent did a great job with it, and created a really fun, if strange, journey. Also, kudos for not overly romanticizing specialty encounters. I'll have the visual of blowfish labia in my head for a week. And not because everytime summer hits, I want to nair myself head to toe, until I remember my own unfortunate reactions...This book hit a special little spot for me, one that alpha men can't reach, fast talking quirky heroines can't reach on their own, and that no billionaire can throw enough money at to bring in reach. So, basically, it didn't have the usual tropes that limit my enjoyment of a book. Lucky me!Full disclosure, I received an ARC of the book. And I'm damn glad I did, because it's been a while since I read something this steamy that didn't raise my hackles in one way or another.
