Read Humane Double Booked For Death (2013) - Plot & Excerpts
This was a fun read, about Darla Pettistone, who's inherited a New York bookstore and a cat from her great-aunt Dee. It's located in a brownstone, and Darla has an apartment on the 3rd floor. She has an apartment in the basement, where Jake, a retired policewoman lives. Darla and Jake are good friends. Darla has managed to secure an autograph signing by one of the hottest YA authors in the country, Valerie Baylor, and Jake has helped her to arrange security for the event. Darla is dismayed that a young woman has appeared across the street with a placard stating that the author had stolen her work. But on the day of the signing, the protestor is nowhere to be seen, but there are 500 teenage girls in line all day for the 7:00 pm event. After about an hour, the long lineup, snaking from the sidewalk up the stairs and into the store, has come to a halt, and Darla learns that Valerie has gone for a smoke break. Suddenly there's a commotion on the street, and Darla runs out to see what's happening. Valerie has been run over by a white van and is dead.Darla and Jake begin to investigate, with and without the assistance of police detective Reese, who had also been doing security on his own time. Hamlet, the black cat, pulls some books off the shelves which make the ladies believe it was murder and not an accident. I liked it. I like anything with cats, but sometimes the authors have no real idea about how cats act or assign more canine-like traits to our feline friends. This one didn't use Hamlet too much, which made me sad, but he did act a bit too on - point to help without much back story - like, why Is he so intuitive? I'd have liked to see a better relationship between the protagonist and Hamlet. One thing that struck me about this cat cozy mystery was its depth in character development and description. Most of these cozies don't flesh out characters so everyone feels kind of flat, including the cat(s). I appreciated the author's attention to detail here. This was one of the few cat mysteries that kept me piqued, and I finished it in a day. I've already added the second one to my shopping cart :)
