Ricky Gervais Presents: The World Of Karl Pilkington (2006) - Plot & Excerpts

First thing first - I love Karl Pilkington, I think he's brilliant. He has a way of looking at the world which just brings a smile to my face. That's why when I first heard that a book containing his wonderful rambling thoughts was going to be released I immediately pre-ordered it. Picture then my disappointment when this arrived. It is not so much that it's not very good - it's just that everything in it is simply warmed up leftovers. The book consists of transcripts of the podcasts (which themselves are brilliant) and very little new material. In other words, if you've listened to the podcasts then you will have already heard everything here. The material itself is very good (and that's why I resisted the temptation to give it a single solitary star) but I can't help shake the feeling that this is simply a shameless cash-in by Gervais. If you want a book by Karl Pilkington then I would recommend getting any of the others he has written - they contain far more original material and work far better as actual books.

Ricky Gervais is the creator of The Office (British version). He also has a radio show in Britain along with his partner, Steve. Karl Pilkington is their engineer. He is either from another planet, or he was dropped on his head as a kid. Not that there’s anything WRONG with that! He’s VERY curious. And I mean, he’s a STRANGE individual. He relates his theories to us on everything from population control, simian affairs within human society, the thoughts of solitary spacemen and how long you can stay alive with your head chopped off. He BELIEVES wholeheartedly in everything he says. That’s what is so likable about him. What makes this book even funnier is Steve and Ricky’s reaction to the wisdom he spouts. They are hilarious. Even if it’s just Ricky saying for the millionth time, “That did NOT happen” and “I don’t know what you’re saying”. The podcasts of these shows is even funnier. Book #63 of my 2006 Book List, finished reading it on 12-23-06.

What do You think about Ricky Gervais Presents: The World Of Karl Pilkington (2006)?

THISISCOMEDYGOLD!!!!!it is so hilarious i just could never put it down! it was always "one minute!!!" or "im coming, im coming!" it is true genious!i was watching the first episode of the ricky gervais show and after that, i was hooked! it was just after the first series that i saw this book in hmv and i was just like "im having that!!!"! i sped through it far too fast which i regret because im really into like big thick novels that are really strong in meaning or whatever and it was a really nice book to cheer me up after reading a depressing chapter of a serious book!a new series is coming on sky called 'an idiot abroad'! i can't wait!!! my dad loves karl, ricky and steve too so now hes borrowing it!i have learned that even a silly book can be an amazing book!

If you've heard the Ricky Gervais Show podcasts, then you've already heard the contents of this book. It's basically a transcript of bits of the show, sewn together by Karl's odd thoughts and drawings. If you're a fan of these shows, I think you'll still like it. It's a great plane read (if you're a nervous flyer like me), and it makes for a supplemental reading source in your bathroom when you get tired of old magazines. I'm not having a go at the book, I'm just telling it like it is. See my 3 out of 5 stars up there? Yeah, I liked it.

The book transcribes some of the best of Karl Pilkington from the podcasts as well as one or two from the XFM days (horse in the house!). So no new material here but you get to see lots of Karl's drawings and photostatic images of his diary (he writes in CAPITAL LETTERS). If you love Karl then you'll love the book, simple as that. A funny read for when you're on the can but nothing more. That said the brilliance of the three shine through better via audio as you get to hear Ricky's impersonations and near constant hysterical laughter, and Karl's heavy Manc accent making ordinary sounding words funnier ("there's a lot of faffin'", "grippage", "rum'n'gin"). It's still funny to read though even if you're familiar with the anecdotes and makes for an easy and funny read. And it's only a penny on marketplace! Alright?
